Secret-fix Roofing

Latchways’ ManSafe fall protection solution incorporating the Constant Force Post is approved for installation on all the major secret-fix roofing systems. The system operates horizontally and along inclines and can be designed to accommodate up to three simultaneous users.

The Constant Force Posts are top fixed to the roof sheet with bulb tite rivets by a process that does not compromise the integrity of the roof. Equally important, in the event of a fall, all the loads generated on the system are absorbed by the Constant Force Posts and therefore no damage is impacted on the roof sheets to which they are attached.

To enhance the overall aesthetic appearance, the Constant Force Posts can be supplied colour matched to the roofing sheets.

N25/210 Guided Type Fall Arrest System: Latchways ManSafe for Secret Fix Roofing, using Constant Force posts.

System Requirements

Category B1 system, fall restraint (approved and tested for fall arrest) system to be used for building maintenance operations by basic trained personnel using standard PPE. System located 2 m from roof edge to provide safe access on roof top for 2 users, for gutter cleaning twice yearly, accessed via roof hatch.

Overall System Length 105 m
Anchorage Device

To be Latchways ManSafe horizontal 7x7 316S Stainless steel cable, conforming to BS MA 29.

Anchorage Points

Latchways Constant Force posts for Euroclad 1000/32F roofing. Top fixed to the crowns of the panel using 16 stitching screws per post.

System to consist of:
1 x End Anchor set: Part Number: 82001-00 (A&E)
8 x Intermediate set: Part Number: 82002-00 (C)
3 x 90° Corner set: Part Number: 82003-00 (D)
4 x Variable set: Part Number: 82004-00 (B)
2 x Transfastener: Part Number: 85085-00
107 m 7x7 Cable: Part Number: 00900-00

The anchorage points must limit the load to a constant force of 10 kN in the event of a fall and absorb the energy integrally. The body of the anchorage is to deploy in the event of a fall pulling the fixings in sheer and preventing damage to the roof system. The posts must be weatherproofed and approved in writing by the roofing manufacturer for use on their systems.

The entire system must be CE marked and hold an EC Declaration of Conformity in accordance to EN795. The system must be manufactured under ISO9002 quality procedures. Installation must only be carried out by contractors trained and approved by Latchways.

NB: The above is an example of a system specification and the highlighted text would be unique to each system design.

Installation

Locating template

Locate position of post, ensuring correct orientation of template relative to roof peaks and system design.

Drilling

Once you have located the position of the post, mark each edge position of the template on the roof sheet with a marker pen, then drill the fixing holes using

the drilling template provided (part no: 65626-00).

After removing the template, it is recommended that all holes drilled into the roof are treated with a protective laquer, prior to fitting the post.

Cleaning

Ensure the area of the base plate and roof where attachment will take place are cleansed with alcohol based solution then:

Attach two sealing strips to the underside of post, covering the fixing areas to be used, ensuring the tape protrudes 5 mm below the edge of the plate.

The tape forms the seal between the plate and the roof.

Tape

Re-check you have the correct position before fixing the post to roof.

Position the post

Aligning one side with pen marks, insert 2 rivets, one at either end and align with holes.

Drop other side of base plate onto the other crown, making sure it aligns with the marks.

Press down until base plate snaps into place.

Fixing

Secure post to roof using all the 20 bulb tite rivets supplied by Latchways.

The rivets are correctly fixed using a rivet tool supplied by Gesipa Systems Ltd (part no’s: 7120028, 7130028 or 7250037).

End posts

On both end posts a D ring should be attached using a single M12 bolt.

It should be tightened to a torque of typically 20 Nm, ensuring that the spring washer is flat.

Intermediate posts

On the intermediate post attach the cable support with an M12 bolt, tightened to a torque of typically 20 Nm, ensuring that the spring washer is flat.

Ensure the D ring and hanger bracket are placed in the correct orientation for the cable to pass through.

Corner posts

On the corner post fix a corner unit with an M12 bolt tightened to a torque of typically 20 Nm, so that the spring washer is flat.

Ensure the unit is orientated in the correct direction for system use.

Variable posts

The variable bracket should be bent using the tube bending tool supplied by Latchways (part no: 85170).

NB: It is recommended that the variable bracket should only be bent when the cable has been threaded through the tube.

Slide the tube bending tool along the arm of the bracket to the point where a bend is required and tighten by twisting the bar on the top.

A maximum angle change of 40° is achieved on each end of the bracket.

To attach to the post follow the instructions in point 9.

Fix the swageless terminal to yoke

Fit the swageless terminal according to the instructions supplied with the post.

NB: If tension adjustment is required at both ends of the system, fit a threaded swageless termination to line tenser, as supplied with the alternative end sets.

First end post

Attach the swageless terminal to yoke:

Remove the clevis pin and attachyoke to D ring securing by replacing the clevis pin.

Fit the split pin and open arms out fully.

Thread the cable

When all posts and bracketry are installed, thread the cable through the support brackets, checking that it is not twisted and is free from kinks.

Ensure that the cable is threaded through all necessary brackets such as hangers and corner brackets.

Second end post

Fit the long run line tenser, turnbuckle and swageless terminal unit to the D ring, ensuring that there is the maximum adjustment available in the turnbuckle.

Fit the split pin and open arms out fully.

Cut the cable

Remove the cable slack from the system, mark the position for cutting and cut the cable to length.

Connect the system

Remove the swageless terminal from the turnbuckle body and attach to cable as per instructions provided.

When the cable is locked in place, re-attach to the turnbuckle.

Tension the system

Twist the turnbuckle to tension the system.

Check system tension

The correct pre-tension is acheived when the disk can be turned freely with your fingers. If this is not the case then the system will need to be adjusted prior to use.

When the correct pre-tension has been achieved, fit split pins to the long run line tenser and the swageless terminal to prevent the turning of the turnbuckle and also maintaining system pre-tension.

Always check the tension indicator before system use.

Testing / Maintenance

  • System testing must be conducted annually to ensure that system certification is maintained. Key system checks such as integrity of the Constant Force Posts, swage tests and torque checks are part of this process. System testing and maintenance should only be undertaken by trained and certified installers. Contact Latchways Sales Department for details of certified installers.

User Instructions

  • Only attach to the system by means of a retractable fall arrest lanyard and full body harness conforming to the appropriate safety standards.
  • Always check pre-tension before use.
  • No more than the maximum number of personnel as defined in the system user instructions should attach to the system.
  • Further details are available in the user instructions.
